In mental health, clients have choice when it comes to counselor selection. When that therapist isn’t a good fit, clients are often encouraged to find a therapist that is a better fit to help them on their healing journey.
When I was a case manager, I used to discuss counselor selection with clients and explain that it was important for them to find the right fit because the therapeutic alliance is what’s most important for prognosis, healing, and reaching desired personal goals. However, when I began the journey into Mentorship as a Mentee, I noticed that things were different. Maybe it is because it is an unregulated industry but people don’t often get choice as easily when it comes to Mentorship. Many times, when enrolled in a Mentorship program, they are given whatever Mentor has availability. Few programs allow you to select the industry you want a Mentor in. And those programs that do, also select a Mentor for you. Social media platforms like TikTok, IG, and FB, are an avenue where you can search for Mentors in a junk drawer of other offerings, but how do you know you are getting someone you can trust? Sometimes, you find more scam artists than actual industry experts that can help. I study Mentors in these platforms and the question I always come to is “If you are really a successful business owner, how do you have time to be on lives for 4-5 hours at a time? There should be emails that need to be answered, calls that need to be taken, presentations they need to present. How is it that they have time as founders to be on a TikTok live for half the day during business hours? Maybe they have automated processes or employees who handle everything. However, it still seems like they should be at least somewhat involved in the day to day, correct? Most of them are still small business owners rather than Fortune 500 corporations so I would imagine they can’t completely take their hands off their business to do something as trivial as going live. I could be wrong… However, that line of thought makes me question if these business owners are simply snake oil salespeople. Appearances are not everything and they may seem highly successful because they talk a good game but they have no measurable success that you can verify off the app. Do people check their references? Do they even have references? Most of them are asking for a hefty financial investment upfront for mentorship but yet many don’t question paying them this without doing appropriate research. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could go somewhere to find industry experts that vet the Mentors so you don’t need to? A place where the choice for a Mentor lies with the Mentee? Well, we created that platform. What is beautiful about Wite Collar is we are subscription based service for Mentorship. This creates the opportunity for micro Mentorship relationships. This means that as a Mentee, you can have your desired Mentor for as long as you want and then end your subscription at any time. You don’t have to remain with a Mentor who is verbally abusive or behaves inappropriately. Or a Mentor who ghosts you and is never available to meet.
